Brahms' Third Symphony is the shortest of the four. It features many tonal contrasts between major and minor and is infused with melodic beauty throughout. Unusually for a symphony, all of the movements end quietly. Here, the third movement in C minor with its sad melody, gives an insight into the deeply felt poetry of Brahms and remains one of the most poular movements in the composer's symphonic canon.
